Spotlights, 4.22, Kathryn Lawson on Simone Weil and Ecological Ethics
This episode of Spotlights features Kathryn Lawson, PhD, lecturer in philosophy at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. We discuss her new book, Ecological Ethics and the Philosophy of Simone Weil: Decreation for the Anthropocene, which was just released in the Environmental Ethics series at Routledge. We discuss her unique juxtaposition of the 20th-century French philosopher Simone Weil and the challenges that the Anthropocene poses for ecological ethics. Some of the topics covered include Weil's concepts of decreation, grace, attention, and ethical action, as well as Weil's reading of Plato as a non-dual thinker who affirms life and embodiment. This episode will surely be of interest to anyone concerned with the importance of spiritual practice for ecological ethics as well as anyone concerned with the way that the Western philosophical traditions bears upon contemporary ecological issues. More information about the book can be found at the publisher's website: www.routledge.com/Ecological-Ethics-and-the-Philosophy-of-Simone-Weil-Decreation-for-the-Anthropocene/Lawson/p/book/9781032583297

Why is this sister ‘preaching’ New Age Eugenics and not the Truth of Christianity let alone Catholicism. Sad times we live in. The confusion that she and many like her are causing the laity and anyone seeking truth is scary because their souls depend on sound teaching. Not tickling of the ears with this gobbligook! Cosmos? That’s Scientology and satanic! Has she been excommunicated like Tielhard had been? This is the garbage taught in Catholic colleges and universities. When Jesus returns will He find His truth at all? We live in sad times. A time such as Sodom and Gomorrah.

Looking forward very much to reading the book in connection with my dissertation. I wonder if Tim Morton has encountered Thich Nhat Hanh and the Zen part of the Mahayana tradition and his econological thought, which centers on interbeing as well as dependent origination in the Plum Village tradition of Buddhism. Thay (Nhat Hanh) was a reformer of aspects of Buddhism and sends people back to root traditions such as Christianity. He wrote the popular versions, such as Jesus and Buddha as Brothers, and also transations and commentary on sutras in the Mahayana tradition (the Diamond, Heart, and Lotus Sutras, and many other sutras. In Plum Village, check out Phap Linh or Brother Spitit and his dharma talks on UA-cam re ecology, neuroscience, and Buddhist teaching.

With the deepening of knowledge in each field and expansion of disciplines even since Berry's time (my college offers degrees in Homeland Security, as if law or criminal justice and other fields aren't narrow enough to produce Homeland Security workers). In this narrowing of universities they are less universal. Less thinking and less wise in general.

Thank you, Sam, and of course Yale forum! Well, all of the conversations have been precious, this one on celebration speaks to the very heart of my life work at this time. We have a collection of 38 evolutionary rituals - celebrations - and daily practises - celebrations of this evolutionary moment based on the transformational moments of our common story. I had not heard Thomas speak to such an extent on celebration before, and it takes the word into the widest human context, cosmic matrix. Thank you so much.

Hi Sam, I deeply appreciate what you are doing with the Forum on Religion and Ecology. I was a student of Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim when they were at Bucknell. I had the great privilege of studying with them as an undergraduate. I didn't have the foresight at that time to see where they were headed with developing the field of religion and ecology, and it's been amazing to watch from a distance. I initially began a graduate program that I shortly backed out of for several reasons, and eventually found my place within the Zen tradition, studying with my teacher as a monastic for 15 years, primarily in central Pennsylvania near Bucknell. Now I'm more of a quasi-monastic, as I am married with kids, run a Zen center, and also teach World Religions part time for a community college in Des Moines, Iowa. All this to say that my classes begin today for the community college and I am inspired by your use of the word "force" and being a force perhaps, of nature. I certainly felt that Mary Evelyn and John embodied that moral force as well as a consistent positivity in their way of interacting with the world. I also appreciate how you use the term lineage. In Zen we also talk about the lineage of Zen ancestors going back to the Buddha. It's a very powerful way of connecting with the source of life. Saying that Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry are, in my view, "lineage holders," means something, and helps me to plug into that energy. In any case, I think we all need constant reminders to plug into that energy that or that love of life, or that union with nature in all its grandeur and all of its terror and destruction that is embodied to a high degree in our "lineage." Thank you!

Really enjoy this lady’s book but I’m a bit confused if she’s a “believer” in Jesus Christ, I would think she would want her children to accept him as well. You aren’t saved by doing communion and doing religious practices. Jesus talked about that extensively. It’s about truly believing in Him and having a relationship with Him. She seems a lot more of the Jewish beliefs than of Christian. I don’t see Christianity as religion either. I’m a Christian which means I believe Jesus is God and have a relationship with Him. I do agree that a lot religions and people of different traditions all seem to have a similar belief and view of nature which I believe as well that connecting with God through creation is essential but I keep a very strong relationship with Jesus Christ. Maybe someone can help me out because maybe I’m misunderstanding some of what she’s saying. I just don’t think she really understands what believing in Jesus really means. I know Catholics seem to have a belief that doing religious practices gets them saved but that’s just not correct.

Irony is constitutive of humanity (to think otherwise would be like believing in "the invention of lies"), different currents have made use of it. Postmodernism is the basis of the current cultural war, which is "bleeding" the human soul (nihilism, cynicism) and the social fabric. Does anyone believe that the cultural battle is going to be won by one of the sides? It should never have happened, with the cultural war we all lose, that is why postmodernism is a mistake of the West, which with such a philosophy is killing itself itself, giving the "moral" opportunity for Orientalism to triumph, also doing so economically and ultimately culturally (there are "suspicions" for the Hebrew religions, but not for the Eastern ones, simply more spiritual and practical and some of them without gods).

If we need a new spirituality, then the spirituality of Saint Paul was wrong, since that can't be true, as his epistles were inspired by the Holy Ghost, it follows that Chardin was wrong. This heresy is taking over the Jesuit Order and with it, the Papacy itself. Dark days ahead.
